Noah Schnapp & Garrett Hedlund star in The Tutor

One of my favorite guilty pleasures is The Crush (1993), starring a young Cary Elwes and a 15-year-old Alicia Silverstone. I get similar vibes with this movie but I doubt either male will be able to compare to a bespectacled Mr. Elwes.

[quote] Even beyond that, characters are getting drugged and potentially framed for sexual inappropriateness, and many institutions are not investigating any of this properly for the story’s convenience. He has to co-parent with Emma Roberts, and it's obviously taken a toll. The kid isn't even in school yet.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 22, 2023 7:02 AM |
I know Victoria isn't a kid anymore, but it's still weird to see her in these kinds of roles. She could still get away with playing a high school or college girl on some CW show.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 22, 2023 4:10 PM |
The premise fails because the actor cast as the tutor isn't remotely good looking enough to spark the interest of a stalker. No one is going to stalk a frowsy frayed balding beanpole. This is where you need star wattage to suspend the disbelief.

"We were going for a very specific look when we cast the role of the Tutor, and that look is the top in the kind of themed porn you really don't want people to know you watch." - Jordan Ross (director)

Movie is being panned by any and all critics that dared to sit through it. Who on Noah's team decided to associate his name with this trash? Garrett Hedlund and Victoria Justice are barely there, washed up has-beens. Noah is a rising star with a social media presence and Netflix main role. Simply dreadful casting.

r18 It apparently only took 4 weeks to film so my only guess is he wanted something he could finish off quickly in between classes and partying. I don't know why he even bothered though he seems pretty uninterested in his acting career outside ST.

R27 I suspect that too and if that's correct this movie will be lame as fuck.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 23, 2023 2:17 PM |
Noah isn’t a rising star. Stranger Things will always be the biggest thing on his resume and the only thing that keeps him relevant. Millie Bobby Brown is the only one who will have a good career outside of it. There is that one fat kid who does Broadway. So he may do well for himself in that field. Noah isn’t a good actor in general.
PS he was not even 18 yet when he filmed this. He just turned 18 in October. So no, he won’t be naked. He was minor still.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 23, 2023 2:19 PM |
Not to be confused with . . .
Offsite Linkby Anonymous | reply 33 | March 23, 2023 2:29 PM |
r32 The only people that wants to hire Millie Bobby Brown are Netflix though. Precisely because of Stranger Things. She's not done anything that isn't Netflix film aimed at teenage girls since that Godzilla movie years ago. And off all of them I'd place money on her having the biggest career shock once ST ends as she's always going to be Eleven even years later to most people. The only one who I think has a secured future is Sadie Sink because she has a good agent and manages to pick a variety of roles in films that are well received
As for Noah's acting its fine. He blows 90% of the ST cast out of the water (especially you Finn) and he's giving the best performance out of the mains even in this crappy film. Give him an OK director and a script that isn't a cobbled together porn plotline, and I'm sure he can do even better. I doubt he'll ever get a role more famous than Will but the odds are against the entire cast in getting anything better than that gig.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 23, 2023 5:15 PM |
Noah’s performance hasn’t been better than anyone on that cast. He’s mediocre at best.
No one cares who is casting MBB, fact is she’s the one who is being cast. And she was in the two last Godzilla movies, yes. She was paid $12 million for Enola Holmes 2 and just turned down a $20 million dollar paycheck to do a ST spinoff solo film. None of the rest of them are banking that kind of money.
All of the females of ST will do better than the males. Noah, especially now coming out as gay, will be limited to only certain roles.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 23, 2023 5:20 PM |
Nah he's one of the better ones. Also given you were saying he's fine at r 2 I'm interested why you've suddenly changed your mind. Did you find the trailer that bad? I'm pretty sure he knows he's limited to roles going forward he's playing against type as a manipulative gay themed twink here not Rambo.
My point is Millie's entire career is Netflix No one else has hired her since she was a kid and she only has Netflix because of ST after ST and she moves into her 20s they have no need to be as generous to her as they have been. especially since some of these movies sound terrible a dragon princess kidnapping movie with Chris Pratt and a lesbian robot thing by the Russo brothers

Word on the Twitter streets is the twist is exactly what R27 said. Hedlund is Noah's biological father and Noah stalks him to get close to him and the future kid Victoria J is having. He wants to be the only kid in his life. Boring hetero bullshit.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 23, 2023 5:45 PM |
R38 That's a Hollywood 51. Once you turn 30, you're cast as someone's father or grandfather regardless of your true age.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 23, 2023 5:50 PM |
Not true. Michael Douglas and Harrison Ford, Warren Beatty, et al played romantic leads into their dotage.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 23, 2023 5:54 PM |
r37 The marketing playing this up as Schnapps character being in love with Hedlund is certainly a choice someone should have reconsidered then given the fact they're making an openly gay actor seem like a sexual predator. On the other hand its also the only reason anyone was going to see this. so maybe they had a point.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 23, 2023 6:01 PM |
R40 because older men with young women has always been a thing. Why? Because the majority of film watchers are men. Men make up the majority of movie going, not women. That’s why it can be a 50 year old man (who still looks great, like Michael Douglas did) but the woman must be young and beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 23, 2023 6:28 PM |
R36 and everyone is allowed to have a different opinion. Just because you think he’s great doesn’t mean we all feel the same. He’s average at best. He’s actually bad numerous times throughout the show, especially on the most recent episodes.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 23, 2023 6:29 PM |
Not to mention he is now out and gay in Hollywood. The roles offered to him will be minimal.

R38 a 38 year old being the father to a teenager can happen. I went to Middle School with a girl who has a kid at 13. Teenage parents exist.

I was one of just 23 people who paid money to see this tripe over the weekend, and Twitter was wrong.
WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW.
Five years ago, Hedlund had an affair with Noah's mother. Soon after, she was found dead in a lake, and though Hedlund was questioned, her death was ruled a suicide. When Noah's father died of cancer, he was able to read the autopsy report, his mother's diaries, etc. and came to believe that Hedlund murdered his mother. Noah inherited a lot of money and with the help of some other rich, conniving teens, he hires Hedlund to tutor him ($2,500 per day!), so he can set him up (faking two physical assaults, drug-laced strawberries, dirty/compromising pics) and totally ruin his life.
After accomplishing his goal, Noah demands that Hedlund meet him at the lake house where his mother died, so he can force him to admit he killed his mother. In the grand finale, we learn that Hedlund is COMPLETELY DERANGED (this is the big twist!) and did kill Noah's mother. Noah shoots Hedlund, and he falls into the lake to a certain death. However, his body is not recovered and in the last scene, Hedlund is being interviewed for another tutoring job.
No gay content at all, and even worse, Hedlund is so unappealing in this. His fake receding hairline was so distracting. Noah's performance came across as more bratty than creepy. And Victoria Justice was so fucking dull as the pregnant girlfriend that it made me wish they'd hired Victoria Jackson in the role. That would have been no less absurd than the movie's ridiculous script. Wrapping this shit up, The Tutor is like one of those bad direct-to-VHS thrillers from the mid-90s, but without the sex and nudity. Proceed with caution.

[quote] Judging from the marketing of The Tutor, you’d be forgiven for mistaking the film for a contemporary queer update of a film like The Crush (1993). While not exclusively the purview of the 90s, a film like The Crush – in which an underage “sexpot” with a malicious streak ensnares an older man in her web of sexual intrigue – prospered in the era of Erotic Thrillers, DTV and VCRS.
[quote] Films in which adults are tempted into sexual relationships with minors are considered taboo for mainstream contemporary audiences. This is why the marketing of The Tutor was intriguing: the trailer suggests that rich, privileged teen Jackson (Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp) unfairly accuses his working class tutor Ethan (Garrett Hedlund) of improper behaviour. The young man then begins to stalk and effectively ruin the life of the older man, jeopardizing his reputation and the status of his relationship with pregnant girlfriend, Annie (Victoria Justice).
[quote] The reality is that The Tutor is (sadly) less queer than its marketing suggests. While Schnapp came out as gay in January 2023 and his upper crust character is queer-coded thanks to a penchant for fashionable turtlenecks, the Ryan King-scripted film is most interested in the economic disparity between the two men.
Where is the movie about the aggressive psychotic bottom I was promised? Ask critics.

Remind me of his career in 5 years post-college and Stranger Things. I don't hate his acting, but he's not doing much to advance his skills in that field.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | March 28, 2023 3:33 AM |
Well no like you said he's in business school at Wharton. And I'd say its honestly probably the smartest career decision he could have made. If he wants to carry on acting after graduation he'll still only be about 21, and has plenty of time to continue to improve and grow into more adult roles, and whether or not Will's gay angst last season was taken from real life it was still one of the best portrayals of a closeted gay teen I've seen in years and he did it with barely any lines so we know what roles he's good at. If he doesn't want to act he doesn't but its not like 90% of his co-stars are ahead of him career wise or are noticeably better.

OK, I watched it this afternoon on one of those 'sites'. It wasn't good but it wasn't bad. Luckily, it's only 90 minutes, but a compact suspenseful movie.
Garrett Hedlund is the only actor who gives it his all. He's smart and sexy, and really makes his character believable with what little he has to work with in the scenes.
The rest of the cast are charicatures, not characters. They're one dimensional, and predictable. This is especially true of Noah Schnapp, who does a terriffic charicature of Jim Parsons' 'Sheldon' on BBT.
This movie could've been much more interesting if there was a 'gay angle' or some romantic scenes between the two lead actors. Sadly, it never goes in that direction. Bottom line - wait until it streams on Netflix or HBO.
